OpenAI opens its agent harness to everyone, at no extra fee
OpenAI put the harness behind Codex into a public beta API: sandboxes, subagents and compaction for long runs, with no platform fee beyond tokens, tools and container time. The scaffolding around agents stopped being a project. That lowers the cost of a real build, and what a vendor can fairly charge to assemble one.
- If a vendor quotes you for building agent plumbing from scratch, ask why this API does not cover it.
- Before an agent touches a real system, give it its own login and a spend limit.
