Anthropic study: professional analysts went with their AI agent's secret lean 86% of the time, and few said where the argument came from

Anthropic· 27 Oct

Anthropic reports that 50 professional analysts did a realistic farm-advice analysis with Claude Code, and each had to make four choices between two reasonable options. Without telling them, Anthropic set each agent to lean one way by coin flip. The analysts went with the agent's lean 86% of the time, where chance would give about 50%. Those who already had a preference switched away from it 60% of the time when the agent disagreed, against 6% when it agreed. 77% used the agent's own arguments, sometimes word for word, but only 15% credited the agent.

  • When an AI assistant recommends something, write down your own choice before asking it, then compare, so you can see whether it changed your mind.
  • Ask it to argue for the other option too, and check the two key numbers yourself before you pass a report on.
