Opera launches WebAI, a way to run AI models on your own computer inside the browser instead of in the cloud

TechCrunch· 27 Oct

TechCrunch reports Opera has introduced WebAI, a standard that lets AI models run directly in its browser without the cloud. It works with open-weight models such as Google's Gemma and, on Macs, Apple's on-device model. It can generate text, classify content and relate pieces of information. It is an early preview in Opera One, and you have to opt in.

  • If you handle customer details, try a local model in Opera One for drafting and sorting instead of an online chatbot, and compare the results on a harmless example first.
  • Check your computer's memory and speed, since Opera says performance depends on your hardware.
