AI data centres could leave a mountain of e-waste, report warns
The Basel Action Network estimates AI infrastructure could produce 395 to 617 million tonnes of e-waste from 2025 to 2050, enough shipping containers to circle the Earth about six times. It says past estimates counted servers and accelerators, only 13% of a data centre's equipment by weight, and missed power, cooling and networking gear.
- When you choose an AI or cloud provider, ask what it does with retired hardware.
- Keep your own equipment in use for longer, and recycle it through a certified scheme when it is done.
