Perplexity open-sources SPACE, the sandbox that runs its Computer agent, after finding no escape in 108 breach attempts
Perplexity open-sourced SPACE, the sandbox platform behind its Computer agent, on 15 October. Each sandbox runs inside a small virtual machine with its own operating system, and a central control plane creates, pauses, resumes or removes it. Perplexity says SPACE has powered all Computer sessions since July and handles millions of sandbox creations a day, three to five times faster than its previous provider. Its published security test found no escape from the virtual machine to the host in 108 attempts.
- Ask any developer who builds agents for you whether the code the agent writes runs in a sandbox, and where its passwords and keys are stored.
- Do not run a home-made agent on a machine that holds your accounting or customer files; use a separate machine or a hosted service until someone has reviewed it.
