Rural data centres are about to get a big US tax break, and some builders are not keen
Wired reports that from 1 January, data centre projects in designated rural opportunity zones in the US become eligible for corporate tax benefits expanded by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The only requirement is capital investment, so the benefit does not depend on creating local jobs. A policy analyst at the Searchlight Institute says that with data centres the jobs assumption goes a little wonky, and some large cloud companies do not seem eager to take the money.
- If you rent cloud computing or AI services, expect the cost of the data centre build-out to keep being argued over, and avoid long fixed contracts that assume prices only fall.
- If you are near a proposed site, read the planning papers for power and water use, since local councils are the main place these decisions are being made.
