UK MPs and peers call for a single AI regulator

Parliament's Joint Committee on Human Rights says UK rules on AI are patchy and confused, with no single body in charge. It wants a new AI law and one independent regulator with enforcement powers, using a risk-based approach: lighter rules for low-risk systems, tougher duties for higher-risk ones, and transparency required throughout.

  • List where you use AI in decisions about people, such as hiring or credit, since that is where tougher rules would land first.
  • Keep simple records of what each AI tool does for you, so you can show your working if rules tighten.
