Microsoft says Windows will run AI agents on the PC and in the cloud, with a new sandbox for agents now generally available
At its Windows and Surface event, Microsoft described Windows as the home for hybrid intelligence: agents that run on the PC when it makes sense and in the cloud when they need to. Its blog says Microsoft Execution Containers, a sandbox that defines which files and networks an agent can reach, is generally available on Windows 11, and that agent activity can be told apart from the person using the device. With permission, Copilot will use local context on the PC and local models, which Microsoft says helps tokens go further. The Verge also notes a redesigned Windows Search and says there was little else for everyday users.
- If staff already run AI agents on Windows PCs, ask your IT support whether the new containers are switched on and which folders each agent can reach.
- Hold off buying hardware for local AI until a task you already pay for is running on it. The new chip machines start at $2,599.99, and the Verge says they target a niche audience for now.
