Brave's Leo AI assistant now offers end-to-end encrypted chats that even Brave cannot read

BRBrave Blog· 15 Oct

Brave announced that conversations with the open-weight GLM model in Leo, the AI assistant built into the Brave browser, are now end-to-end encrypted. The browser encrypts each prompt on the device with Oblivious HTTP so that only an attested Trusted Execution Environment can decrypt it. Brave's open-source AI Gateway relays the message without passing on the user's IP address to the provider, NEAR AI. The GLM 5.3 Flash model runs in a sealed, Nvidia-backed hardware enclave, and Brave says that isolation protects prompts and replies from Brave and NEAR AI. It is available in Brave Release, Beta and Nightly.

  • If client or staff details ever go into an AI chat, ask the provider whether the conversation is stored or used for training, and keep names and account numbers out of it.
  • Write a one-line rule for the team about what may be pasted into any AI assistant, and keep it where everyone can see it.
