ChatGPT's Chrome extension can now read your open tabs and carry out tasks in them

Engadget· 16 Oct

OpenAI updated its ChatGPT extension for Chrome. In ChatGPT it can look at the tabs you have open to answer questions, for example comparing products on several pages by price and delivery time. In ChatGPT Work, OpenAI's agent for multi-step tasks, it can send messages, fill in forms and organise tabs. OpenAI's help pages say browser history is off by default and ChatGPT asks each time it wants it. The extension also works in Edge, Brave and Opera, and the side chat panel runs in Chrome, Edge, Brave and Vivaldi.

  • Try it on a low-risk job first, such as comparing three supplier or software pages in open tabs, before letting it fill in forms on a site where you are signed in.
  • Check what is open in the browser before you start a task. Close tabs for banking, payroll and customer records so they are not offered to the assistant as context.
