Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order on 18 September telling California to consult experts on tightening its AI safety laws. Options named include placing independent monitors inside top AI labs and requiring a kill switch that shuts the most advanced models down automatically. Recommendations are due within two months. It targets frontier labs, not everyday tools.
