AI scams cost Americans nearly $900M last year, FBI says

TechCrunch· 28 Sep

Americans lost nearly $900 million to AI-driven scams last year, up 24 percent, according to the FBI. DetectifAI, started after a cloned voice fooled its founder's grandfather, runs small models on the phone itself to spot synthetic voices during calls in real time. It already screens more than 100,000 calls a month for financial institutions in India.

  • Set a rule: no payment or bank detail change is approved on a phone call alone.
  • Tell your team that a familiar voice is no longer proof of who is calling.
