Google launches Universal Cart in the US: one shopping cart across Search and Gemini, with the merchant still the seller

Google Blog· 15 Oct

Google launched Universal Cart in the US, in Google Search (including AI Mode) and the Gemini app. Shoppers save products from different retailers in one cart. It sends alerts when prices drop or out-of-stock items return, shows promo codes and suggests the best card to pay with. Checkout runs through Google Pay in the cart or by moving items to the merchant's own cart, using the Universal Commerce Protocol. Google says the merchant stays the seller of record and handles confirmations and support. The cart is built on the Shopping Graph's more than 60 billion product listings.

  • If you sell products online, open Google Merchant Center and check that your prices and stock levels are current. Google says the cart watches Shopping Graph listings for price drops and restocks.
  • If your shop runs on Shopify, ask Shopify or your web developer whether your store can take part in checkout through the Universal Commerce Protocol. Google names many Shopify merchants as checkout partners.
