Anthropic commits 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund, with more added as the company grows
Anthropic announced on 18 October that, subject to stockholder approval, 5% of its shares will go to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new entity whose stake rises by a further 2% at the board's discretion for every 50% increase in company value above a set baseline. The fund is a wholly-owned LLC rather than a 501(c)(3), and none of its equity will be used for lobbying or political giving. Anthropic says it could fund large donations to nonprofits or direct distributions, and cites labour market impacts, where it has already committed $200 million.
- Note that Anthropic says more detail on the fund's structure and governance is coming in the next few months, so there is nothing to change in how you use Claude today.
- If you employ staff who use AI tools daily, add a line to your next team meeting on which tasks the tools now cover, so any change in roles is discussed early.
