Cloudflare says the Deno team is joining it to make Workers apps easier to run on your own servers
Cloudflare announced that the Deno team is joining it. Ryan Dahl, who created Node.js, and Bert Belder will lead an effort to make self-hosting the Workers programming model, including Durable Objects, a first-class supported way to build and run apps. Cloudflare says its own open source runtime, workerd, only ran Durable Objects on a single instance, and that Deno's open source celld fills that gap. TechCrunch reports the financial terms were not disclosed.
- If your developer builds your site or tools on Cloudflare Workers, ask whether the code could move to another host or your own server, and write the answer down.
- Nothing needs changing today. Cloudflare says more announcements will come in the coming months, and you can already self-host workerd or celld.
