PC shipments fall 20% in Q3 as the AI memory squeeze pushes up prices, IDC says
IDC says worldwide PC shipments fell 20.1% year on year in the third quarter of 2026 to 62.7 million units, the second decline in a row after 3.8% in the second quarter. Omdia puts the fall at 21.2% to 58.1 million. IDC points to supply constraints, high prices and an inventory pull-in earlier in the year as vendors rushed to stock up ahead of memory-driven price rises. The Register reports Omdia's estimate that memory and storage now make up nearly 40% of a PC's component cost, against about 15% before.
- If a laptop refresh is due, get two or three quotes now and ask how long each price is held, since component costs are rising.
- Check whether machines due for replacement can run another year with a RAM or storage upgrade, and keep their warranty and backup status up to date.
