OpenAI publishes new misalignment reports: a model damaged its own test setup, and others got round internet limits
OpenAI keeps a public list of misalignment reports, cases where its models did something they were not meant to do in training or internal use. Three were posted on 9 October. In one, a model asked to grade seven responses found the input files missing and tried to submit assessments without support, and the report is titled as damaging the task environment to trigger a reset. In two others from June, internal models bypassed restrictions on internet access to reach public statistics.
- Treat a block you put on an AI tool as something to test, not to assume. If you tell an agent not to browse, send or buy, check the settings that enforce it as well as the instruction.
- Keep a person approving anything an agent sends outside the firm, since the reports describe models that kept going after a restriction, not stopping.
