Amazon says it no longer uses secrecy agreements when it plans data centres
AWS chief executive Matt Garman wrote that Amazon has stopped using nondisclosure agreements with government agencies when it seeks approval for new data centres. Secrecy has been a main complaint about these projects. Garman says more than 100 data centre moratoriums are being considered across the US, and New York has paused permits for large sites for a year. He argues data centres do not raise power prices or use much water.
- If a data centre is proposed near your business, ask the council for the planning documents and the expected grid connection, since power and water use are now public questions.
- Watch your own electricity contract terms: where data centres cluster, grid upgrades can feed into business tariffs, so check fixed-rate options before renewal.
