US charges a California man with smuggling $300 million of AI servers to China
US prosecutors have charged Greg Lui, 38, of San Gabriel, California, with smuggling more than $300 million of servers packed with US-made AI chips to China between 2023 and 2024. They say his company, Earthmade Computer, shipped them without the required export licences, first to Malaysia and Singapore and then on to China, using false paperwork. He faces three charges and is presumed innocent.
- If you resell or ship computer hardware, check the export rules for high-end graphics cards and servers before you quote a buyer outside the EU or US.
- Treat an unusual bulk order for top-end GPUs, especially one routed through a third country, as a red flag and ask for the end user in writing.
