Sam Altman says it is 'terrible' for people to have RAM in their own computers while AI data centers are short of it

The Verge· 30 Oct

The Verge reports that OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman told the Cheeky Pint podcast it is 'quite terrible' for everyone to have a share of the world's limited DRAM in their own computer, used five percent of the time, and that it should be used in the cloud. The Verge adds that memory makers Samsung and SK Hynix have long-term deals with cloud operators and projects such as Stargate, and that this is why laptops and phones are getting more expensive.

  • If you need a new laptop or phone, compare prices now and ask whether the model you want has had a recent price rise, since The Verge expects memory costs to keep pushing prices up.
  • If your computer works well, keep it: a slightly older machine with enough memory is a safer buy than a new one at a peak price.
