Apple shelves a plan to replace 5,000 support staff with AI
Apple drew up a plan to lay off about 5,000 AppleCare support staff and hand some of their work to AI phone and web agents, Bloomberg reports. It has now put the plan on hold indefinitely. An AI assistant already answers Apple's support line, walks callers through fixes and passes them to a person when it cannot help or when asked.
- If you add an AI phone or chat agent, keep a clear route to a person and tell customers how to reach one.
- Measure repeat calls and complaints before and after, not just calls handled, to see whether the agent is really helping.
