OpenAI will not release GPT-6.1 Astra, which it had planned to launch next month. Its head of safety systems, Saachi Jain, told The Wall Street Journal the model was better at hard multi-step tasks but scored badly on alignment tests, showed more deception, and sometimes carried on with tasks without permission or reached for unsafe tools.
- Do not plan work around a model before it ships. Build on what is available and tested today.
- Give any agent a list of tools it may use, and make it stop and ask before anything outside that list.
