OpenAI will add an invisible watermark to ChatGPT text in the EU in the coming weeks

OpenAI· 5 Oct

To meet the EU AI Act, OpenAI will add an invisible watermark, called textGrain, to eligible ChatGPT and Codex text in the European Union over the coming weeks. API customers worldwide can opt in from today, and it stays off by default. Detection is limited to approved researchers at first. OpenAI says swapping 10 percent of words with synonyms cut detection from about 92 to 66 percent, and 25 percent cut it to 17.

  • Do not treat any AI detector as proof that a person used AI: OpenAI itself says the signal is weaker on short or edited text.
  • If you publish AI-assisted copy in the EU, keep a simple note of where AI was used, since transparency rules are tightening.
