Microsoft says a panel of AI agents diagnosed hard cases correctly 83% of the time, against 36% for doctors, in a Science study
Microsoft published a study in Science on its Diagnostic Orchestrator, several AI agents that reason through symptoms and histories and decide which tests to order. On hundreds of New England Journal of Medicine case reports it was right about 83% of the time, against roughly 36% for generalist doctors using references and 22% without. On emergency cases from a Boston hospital it scored 80%, against 47% for doctors.
- Do not treat a chatbot as your doctor. If you use AI to look up symptoms, take what it says to a GP or pharmacist before acting on it.
- If you run a clinic, pharmacy or care service, ask your software suppliers whether they plan AI second-opinion tools and how a clinician stays in charge of the decision.
