UK launches an AI Biosecurity Lab with 100 million pounds of funding plus up to 200 million pounds from OpenAI and Anthropic
The UK government announced the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL), which it calls the world's first dedicated AI biosecurity organisation. It is backed by 100 million pounds of government funding, plus up to 200 million pounds in company commitments from OpenAI and Anthropic, as part of a National AI Biosecurity Initiative. AIBL will work with the UK's national biosecurity centres and life sciences industry on two early goals: spotting emerging biological threats sooner, and speeding up the development of vaccines and treatments.
- If you work in life sciences, public health or biosecurity in the UK, note AIBL as a future partner for frontier AI research collaborations as it stands up.
- There is nothing for the general public to switch on or opt into yet. This is government funding for a new body, not a product.
