The Texas Attorney General sues OpenAI and Sam Altman, saying ChatGPT was sold as safe and reliable but harmed users
On 23 October Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced a lawsuit against OpenAI Global, its affiliates and CEO Sam Altman. The release says OpenAI marketed ChatGPT as a safe and reliable tool but failed to protect Texans, including children, from harms such as inaccurate answers, lost critical thinking skills and minors becoming dependent on a chatbot. The claims are under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Act.
- If children in your home or staff use ChatGPT, agree simple rules: no personal or client details, and check any fact or figure it gives you before you act on it.
- If you use ChatGPT for customer-facing work, keep a person in the loop for anything that affects money, health or a legal decision.
