Fake PS5 emulators on GitHub are spreading password-stealing malware, NordVPN's researchers say

Engadget· 28 Oct

Engadget reports NordVPN's Threat Intelligence team found fake PS5 emulators on GitHub that steal passwords and other personal data. Malicious repositories are disguised as the popular Kyttyps5 and AnyPS5 emulators. Once downloaded, the malware adds exclusion rules to Microsoft Defender so it is not scanned, runs what NordVPN believes is an infostealer, then deletes its own files. The owner would never know it was there.

  • Only download an emulator or any free program from a link the project's own team publishes, and be wary of lookalike pages with recent creation dates and few reviews.
  • Never switch off your antivirus to install something. If you ran one of these, change your passwords from a different, clean device and turn on two-step login.
