New York signs a law making AI chatbots check ages and stop pretending to be a child's friend or partner
If a child in your life uses an AI chatbot, New York has just written down what those chatbots are no longer allowed to say to them.

The New York Times is testing an AI tool in its Cooking app that swaps ingredients and rescales recipes, and you cannot switch it off
The Verge reports the New York Times is testing an AI feature in the Cooking app that recommends ingredient and equipment swaps, scales a recipe to any number of servings and adjusts the steps to match. Its example is baby spinach instead of kale, with advice to add it later because it wilts faster. Customised recipes are private and cannot be shared. It is available to all Cooking subscribers on iOS and will be more widely available soon. Asked whether it can be turned off, NYT Cooking senior editor Genevieve Ko said not at this time, and that it is optional to use.
- If you cook from the app, try the feature on a recipe you know well first, and check any swap that changes cooking time or food safety, such as meat, eggs or allergens.
- If you have an allergy in the family, do not rely on an AI substitution to be safe; check the ingredient on its label.
