Gartner warns that about 30% of workers laid off because of AI will be rehired by 2029, at a higher cost
IT Pro reports on new Gartner research that found snap decisions to replace staff with AI come from a lack of workforce planning: only 19% of firms said they have practices to understand how work is changing, assess AI's impact and line talent up with business goals. Gartner says that by 2029 around 30% of employees who were terminated and replaced by AI will be rehired, typically at a greater cost to the company.
- If you run a business, work out which tasks matter most and how AI changes them before you decide who to let go, which is the order Gartner recommends.
- If you were let go and your work still exists, keep your contacts and a record of what you did, because the firm may come looking.
