Wired finds about 400 apps and sites posing as pet-portrait and fitness AI tools that hide sexual deepfake features
WIRED reports that a network of more than 400 connected domains and apps often presents itself as an everyday service such as pet portraits, language tuition or an AI workout coach. Researchers found that on each download the app calls a server, which decides whether to show the harmless version or load a web interface for making explicit AI images and videos from uploaded photos. One trigger appears to be installing the app after clicking an ad on Meta's platforms.
- Do not upload photos of other people, and especially children, to any AI photo app you do not know, and be wary of apps that only reached you through a social media ad.
- If you find a deepfake of yourself or your child, report it to the platform and to the police, and keep screenshots as evidence.
